Sleep Apnea Treatments

Sleep apnea is a sleep condition characterized by regular drop in breathing, frequently lasting up to a minute. Each of these "breathless" episodes is called an apnea event, which can take place as frequently as a hundred times a night. The effects of sleep apnea can be harmful, including hypertension, stroke and cardiovascular disease. Numerous sleep apnea remedies are available, varying from lifestyle modifications, to oral devices, to surgical treatment.

The most common obstructive sleep apnea is resulting when tissue, the tongue, or relaxed throat muscles block the respiratory tract. Lifestyle changes, the least invasive of sleep apnea solutions, are the primary step to alleviate sleep apnea. These modifications frequently consist of reducing weight, preventing alcohol, decreasing caffeine, and the cessation of smoking.

Sleep position modification is another of the non-invasive sleep apnea treatments. Avoid sleeping on the back; instead sleep on the stomach or on the side. Sleeping on the back permits the tongue to unwind toward the back of the throat, blocking the air passage. Turning to the side and staying there can assist avoid blockage happening. Utilizing pillows to prop the head can also help, as can a tough item, such as a tennis ball propped behind the back to avoid rolling over throughout sleep.

Oral gadgets, moderately intrusive, can also be used as sleep apnea treatments. Oral gadgets vary from simple prosthetics put in the mouth throughout sleep to prevent the tongue from obstructing the air passage, to using CPAP, constant favorable respiratory tract pressure. CPAP uses a medical pump, connected to versatile tubing, which is attached to a mask that fits over the nose, or mouth or both. Via this mask, the CPAP pumps a stream of air into the mouth during sleep to keep the air passage open.

Other sleep apnea solutions include taste buds (roofing system of the mouth) stiffening. Insertions of polyester product into the taste buds decrease vibration. Scarring, too, can stiffen the taste buds, accomplished by injecting a scarring service (injection snoreplasty), utilizing a laser, or surgical treatment to develop the scarring.

Airway expanding through tissue reduction is yet another of the sleep apnea remedies. Radiofrequency Tissue Reduction (RFTR) involves piercing the tongue, soft taste buds or throat using a needle linked to a radio frequency generator. The inner tissues diminish, but outer tissues, those which contain taste buds, remain unaffected.

The most intrusive sleep apnea remedies are surgical procedures. Uvulopalatoplasty is a treatment that can diminish or remove the uvula (that tissue that hangs from the roofing system of the mouth in the back of the throat). Nasal surgery involves correcting the alignment of the septum (the barrier between the nostrils) in patients where nasal blockage complicates the sleep apnea. In addition, a tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy might be performed to expand the airway.

The most invasive of sleep apnea remedies, is a surgery called Maxillomandibular advancement (Mixed Martial Arts). Mixed Martial Arts is carried out just in the most challenging cases. It involves separating the upper and lower jaw, moving them forward and reattaching them with pins or plates.
